Over the past few months, we’ve brought you news about how Jaguar and Land Rover are developing some of the most advanced autonomous vehicles on the road, and now, they’re taking self-driving technology off-road, too.
Project Cortex Is the Way of the Future
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) recently announced an investment of almost five million dollars in Project Cortex, a new off-road self-driving SUV. Cortex will use the world’s first 5D terrain mapping technology to provide autonomous capability in any weather conditions and the most challenging terrain. The 5D technique uses multiple sensory inputs, like acoustic, video, and radar, as well as light detection and distance sensing (LiDAR) data to build a complete picture of the vehicle’s surroundings in real-time.
It's important that we develop our self-driving vehicles with the same capability and performance customers expect from all Jaguars and Land Rovers. Self-driving is inevitability for the automotive industry and ensuring that our autonomous offering is the most enjoyable, capable and safe is what drives us to explore the boundaries of innovation. Cortex gives us the opportunity to work with some fantastic partners whose expertise will help us realize this vision in the near future.
- Chris Holmes, Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Research Manager, JLR
Cortex and JLR are already testing the off-road autonomous driving technology on closed course tracks in the UK, and both Jaguar and Land Rover have begun road-testing other models as well. Keep a lookout on the streets and on the trails for driverless models coming soon.
Right now, we have plenty of non-autonomous new models in need of drivers, so if you want to see some of the most advanced performance machines on the road, visit our showroom at 1000 Auto Park Boulevard, CARY, NC 27511 or reach out to us online to schedule an introduction.
