Thinking about taking a trip this spring, but need ideas on what to do? Why not visit one of the many beautiful lighthouses that Virginia has to offer? You can make a day trip out of visiting one, or string together a trip over the course of a few days to get a more thorough history lesson. Whichever ones you choose to see, you're in for a treat! Read on to discover Land Rover Cary's list of some of the best, most scenic lighthouses in Virginia.

Old and New Cape Henry Lighthouses

Location: Fort Story

Built in 1792, the old Cape Henry Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay, and the third-oldest still standing in the U.S. The 90-foot sandstone tower is also the official symbol of the City of Virginia Beach. History buffs will love learning about the lighthouse's lengthy past. The new lighthouse sits a mere 357 feet away from the original and is the tallest cast iron lighthouse in the U.S. Ironically, the new structure isn't open to the public, but it can be viewed quite well from the original.

Assateague Lighthouse

Location: Assateague Island (pictured above)

This picturesque lighthouse is located within the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Overseen by the U.S. Coast Guard, it is only open for tours a couple of times a year, but visitors can appreciate the recently painted exterior anytime from within the refuge. Built in 1833, this regal pillar stands 145 feet tall and continues to work as a warning beacon to ships around the barrier islands.

New Point Comfort Lighthouse

Location: The entrance of Mobjack Bay in Matthews County

Commissioned in 1801 by Thomas Jefferson, this octagonal sandstone structure stands 63 feet tall and stands as the lonely guard of the entrance of Mobjack Bay. It's the third-oldest lighthouse still standing on the Chesapeake Bay. While not officially open to the public, boat access to it isn't restricted (and many a kayaker has paddled up to its rocky base), and it can also be viewed from the New Point Comfort Observation Walkway located at the southern end of Route 600.

Jones Point Lighthouse

Location: On the Potomac River, just south of Old Town Alexandria

For a change of pace, visit this river lighthouse, which was built in 1855 and is the last remaining river lighthouse in Virginia. Maintained by the National Park Service, the lighthouse is located within Jones Point Park. Take the kids out to see the Lighthouse Life program, led by knowledgeable rangers, and then spend some time fishing or canoeing on the river, enjoying the view of the quaint little lighthouse.

With this variety of options, you're sure to find a lighthouse or two that you'd like to visit. Land Rover Cary wishes you a lovely time!
